Silica LR No. 3 powder pillows measure silica, the constituent that forms the hardest scale in a boiler and the one that limits how far a reverse osmosis plant can be pushed. Silica scale cannot be dissolved off in service, so it is controlled in advance rather than reacted to.

Why does silica limit reverse osmosis recovery?
Silica has a low solubility and forms a scale that will not clean off easily, so recovery has to stay below the point where it saturates in the concentrate stream.
