Overview

Phenol No. 3 tablets measure phenol, a regulated contaminant in industrial effluent and a taste and odour problem in drinking water, because chlorine converts even traces of it into intensely flavoured chlorophenols. Refineries, coke works and resin plants are the usual sources.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a trace of phenol such a problem in drinking water?
Chlorine reacts with phenol to form chlorophenols, detectable by taste and smell far below the level at which phenol itself would be noticed.

Photometer grade or rapid grade — which do I need?
Photometer grade is formulated for instruments that read a cuvette. If you work with a visual comparator or colour disc, ask us for the rapid-dissolving grade instead.

How should the tablets be stored?
Keep them sealed, cool and dry, and work through the oldest strip first. Once a strip is opened the tablets take up moisture, so use them promptly.
